D-ribose, also called ribose or Beta-D-ribofuranos. It is a five carbon molecule glucose of sugar that your body produces naturally. It helps produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate.) Ribose supplements are widely used as an alternative medicine in the health and wellness industry as it is enormously effective in enhancing the human body to its prime condition. Medicinally, it is most often used to increase muscle energy and improve exercise performance.

In some illnesses, D-ribose is used to help improve exercise tolerance or prevent post-exercise pain, cramping and stiffness. In people with heart disease, it may also help get energy to the heart during exercise.

Benefits
  • D-ribose helps to overcome chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • Studies have shown that oral intake of D-ribose significantly boosts ATP recovery so that the recovery period for the skeletal and cardiac muscle is much faster back to its pre workout levels. By taking in 3-5 grams before and after rigorous training exercises greatly reduces recovery from exhaustion. The effects of D-ribose is generally immediate that lasts for about 80 minutes and peaks within 40 minutes. Moreover, D-ribose greatly boosts cardiovascular and muscular functions by maintaining high levels of cellular energy and shortening the time it takes for the muscles of the heart and body to recover.

  • D-ribose helps to maintain a healthy heart.
  • D-ribose increases the resistance of the cardiac muscles from fatigue by building more ATP in the body significantly boosting heart health towards recovery. It is very effective in maintaining the physical integrity of the heart muscle. D-ribose naturally increases levels of ATP to improve cardiac contraction which in turn increases blood flow therefore allowing a faster recovery of the cardiac muscles following a heart attack. Moreover, D-ribose also plays a key supplemental role in managing ischemic heart diseases as there is deprived blood flow to the heart due to inadequate or weak heart contractions. The ATP production is increased to restore the cardiac tissue’s integrity by allowing more blood flow and resistance to fatigue.

  • a) D-ribose can be administered in a wide variety of clinical settings for cardiovascular disease:
  • 1. Coronary artery disease

    2. Stable and unstable angina

    3. Recovery from cardiac surgery or major cardiac event, such as heart attack

    4. Congestive heart failure and cardiac hypertrophy to promote diastolic cardiac function.

    5. Artial and ventricular arrhythmia

    6. Cardiac diagnosis to unmask hibernating myocardium

  • b) D-ribose helps in congestive heart failure
  • Ribose therapy directly supports the heart’s ability to preserve and rebuild its energy pool. Through this action, ribose helps the heart with the ATP it needs to perform its work.

  • c) D-ribose helps in coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease
  • Ischemic heart or vascular disease has a profound effect on tissue energy metabolism. The energy pool can be depressed as much as 40 percent in patients with chronic cardiac ischemia. D-ribose raises the energy level of the heart in chronically ischemic patients reduces fatigue, increases exercise tolerance and enhances quality of life.

  • d) D-ribose helps in myocardial protection and recovery in cardiac surgery
  • Giving ribose to patients both before (as a cardioprotective) and following (to restore lost energy) cardiac intervention has proven to be an effective way to improve clinical outcome. It helps the heart pump blood more easily and completely following the surgical intervention.

  • e) D-ribose and “beating heart” surgery improve bypass outcomes
  • D-ribose rebuilds the cellular energy pool, allowing the cell to better manage its calcium load, reducing nociceptor activation and outflow of potassium ions, modulating the pain and relaxing the muscle. D- ribose therapy in patients with fibromyalgia is very effective in lowering fatigue, reducing soreness and stiffness, and increasing patient quality of life.

  • D-ribose helps in controlling our blood sugar.
  • D-ribose increases the production of insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas that assists in the transport of glucose to the different organs in the body. Too much glucose in the body is generally not good and D-ribose has shown to have an inhibitory and regulatory effect on an enzyme called phosphoglucomutase secreted by the liver that breaks down glycogen (glucose stores in the body) thus lowering blood sugar levels.

  • D-ribose helps in fibromyalgia and muscle health
  • Fibromyalgia is a severely debilitating condition characterized by chronic pain in certain locations in the body. D-ribose affects ATP synthesis which directly results in significantly decreasing muscle pain leading to a better quality of life.
